Every February, at the tail end of the Chinese New Year, thousands of young people flock to a small village in Taiwan to ask the heavens for a brighter future. They write their wishes onto flying lanterns, and release them into the sky like miniature hot air balloons. The ritual is known as the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, and it has become a sought-after Instagram moment for tourists from around the world. The festival's aftermath is not as pretty. After the crowds have disappeared, fallen lanterns clog the landscape, and a handful of the village's oldest residents are left to clean up the mess. WHAT GOES UP // MUST COME DOWN is a combination virtual reality/flat video installation that brings viewers to the Sky Lantern Festival, exploring the conflict between age and youth, man and nature.
